There are few things in this world that are better than an awesome sandwich, especially if you exclude roller coasters and monster trucks. Thankfully for us, Darwin is here to ensure that none of us ever have to eat a bad sandwich again. From the owners of Riley’s outside of Sedgewick, Darwin is a tiny shop bursting with delicious sandwiches, salads and soups.
It’s on Clinton St. across from the Post Standard, which means often times it can be a mess of one ways, lack of parking spots and ridiculous amounts of construction. However, if those are the only negative things I can think of regarding this delightful restaurant, it should be a key indicator that it is a spot you need to get to.
They have an ever rotating menu of creative choices for you to choose from, each with an interesting spin on a classic. For example, their ‘This Little Pigggy Went to Utica’ has pulled pork, baked ham, provolone on a bed of Utica greens. I went with ‘The Hot Chick’ which is chicken breast, frizzled (read: fried) celery, lettuce and a blue cheese cream cheese spread. This thick slab of excellence comes on locally baked Pasta’s stretch bread, which is the only bread I will really eat now. The chicken was a good portion, the fried celery frizzles added a little sweetness along with the crunch of the celery, that sauce was boss and the bread was a perfect combination of chewy and a little crusty.
Darwin is probably my favorite restaurant in town right now because of its quirky menu and perfect execution. Check their website (darwinonclinton.com) daily for changes.
